Reflective Shade Cloths

Highly Reflective Aluminized Shade Fabric

World Famous Aluminet is a highly reflective Aluminized Shade Fabric that provides a radically cooler shade environment than does traditional black shade cloth. Reflecting the intense IR radiation of the Sun, many Aluminet customers report double digit temperature improvements versus the dark shade cloth that they had used previously.

Specific benefits of Aluminet include: moderation of day/night temperatures, enabling microclimate control in greenhouses and nurseries, uniform shadows, control of air movement and optimum diffused light transmission to the crops. Aluminet heat curtain protects against frost radiation and saves energy in heated structures due to its high reflectivity.

Over time, the Aluminet line has blossomed to over a dozen offerings, including a new Fire Retardant Energy Curtain, Aluminet ICFR. Green-Tek is proud of its over 20 year affiliation with this product, which is just as revolutionary now as it was when we launched it in North America so many years ago.

Aluminet: I or O?

When it changed the shade cloth market over twenty years ago, there was only one type of Aluminet available. Later, some growers reported a desire for a knit pattern that they felt would endure high winds more effectively. After some research, a new knit pattern was developed to answer this need. The original thought was to name this material Aluminet ‘O’, which meant for outdoor applications. The original Aluminet pattern received an ‘I’ designation for indoor applications. It was thought that this is how demand would dictate the two products.

To our surprise, while many growers switched to Aluminet ‘O’, many remained with the original knit pattern, even though both are used for outdoor applications. It turns out that the knit pattern of Aluminet ‘O’ leads to a product that has far more stretch in it that the ‘I’ product. While some growers found this to be a virtue, others appreciate the limited stretch properties of the original Aluminet ‘I’. Indeed, the demand for both types of open mesh Aluminet has evolved to a point where our sales of both knit patterns end up in outdoor applications 99% of the time. Again, both knit patterns are and have been used outdoors for years. It is important to note that the UV warranty for both products is the same.

For Indoor applications, we now recommend Aluminet IC.

So which is best for you?

Consider Aluminet I if you:

  • require tight size tolerances for your application
  • do not like a lot of stretchiness
  • require a tape and brass grommet finished border around your tarp
  • prefer the look of this knit pattern (an aesthetic judgment)

Consider Aluminet O if you:

  • want or do not mind considerable stretch
  • like to pull the raw unfinished product very tight and fasten with plastic grommets or shade pins
  • do not require tape and brass grommets, as they do not stretch with the material
  • prefer the look of this knit pattern
